When copy-editing, I will:
- Correct errors in spelling, grammar, punctuation and usage
- Check for clarity of the text, suggesting improvements as required
- Check for repetition i.e. overuse of certain words or phrases, and suggest alternatives
- Highlight any inconsistencies of plot and characters in works of fiction
- Flag up events or actions that seem implausible
- Make sure the timeline of events is logical
- Check paragraph indentation
- Change straight quote marks to curly
- Produce a style sheet that your proofreader can later refer to
When proofreading, I will:

- Look for any inconsistencies in layout, e.g. fonts and paragraph styles
- Check for consistency in spelling and hyphenation, using a style guide if one has been supplied
- Check cross-references, chapter headings and page numbering
- Check paragraph indentation
- Change straight quote marks to curly
- Remove double spaces
The cost…
My charges will be determined by the complexity of the work, the word count and how much needs to be done, especially if there are a lot of errors that need attending to. The best thing to do is to email me at the address below, or contact me through Twitter. We can then start a conversation and I’ll provide you with a no-obligation quote. I will ask for a sample of the text, and either copy-edit or proofread a section so you can see what I’ll do for you and what’s involved. (That bit is free, by the way.)
And when I have copy-edited or proofread your text, I am happy for you to get in touch if there is anything you are unsure about. This is very much a collaboration, and I want you to be proud of what you’ve created.
